How Welding Is Done

What Does a Reliable Welder Mean by a Seal Weld?

Our Adam's Welding & Ornamental Iron reliable welder decided to write this blog to inform readers about what exactly a seal weld does. So, let us begin, this is a weld whose primary function is to seal joints. Seal welds are frequently used in gas or liquid containers that house gaseous or liquid substances to prevent leakage.

The presence of these seal welds will also prevent any gas or fluids from entering certain off-limits areas, where they have been known to create corrosion or other similar damage. Seal welds are regularly applied to parts which are to be galvanized. And to date, there are 2 kinds of ready-to-be galvanized joints, which are regular and vented, and can be welded together respectively using a seal weld; there is, however, also a third ready-to-be galvanized joint, but this does not need a seal weld.

With standard joints, care has to be taken to make sure the seal welds are not porous, so as not to permit any type of leakage. Vented joints are ones which have either vents or holes in them that allow gas to escape. When applying seal welds to these, it is vital the vents are placed in the right locations; as a build-up of gas can damage the joints. It must also be noted, that seal welds are only placed as containment measures, and should never be expected to add any strength to a joint.

It is important both the designer and fabricator check the seal placements are all in code requirements, although code violations are permitted in some cases which could affect the flexibility of the joints. It is necessary also to make sure the seal weld does not inadvertently end up doing some unwanted structural function, or the presence of the welds do not affect any ultrasonic inspections too much.
